Discussion:
[Freecol-developers] multiplayer

We recently received a patch set from Ben B., fixing a bunch of problems
with multiplayer mode, which has clearly been neglected. These have been
hacked a bit and recently committed, such that multiplayer now works again
for me. However it would be good if people not using linux could test
trunk and let me know if there are problems while I have a current
understanding of the issues.

Cheers,
Mike Pope, ... still hoping to hear about the installer problem too

I know that I had no luck trying the patch you provided, but that still may
have been a build issue unrelated to the actual installer. I never got the
installer ,exe file to run.

I've never tried multi-player. Do you have to actually play against
someone? Is there a way to arrange a time to test if so?

No. What I do is start freecol once, select "start multiplayer game",
which will bring up the usual start-game panel (with an extra chat
area). If you set all the nations except one to "AI only", and then start
another instance of freecol and select "join multiplayer game" you should
have two distinct players connected. Enable "I'm ready" in both windows,
and "start game" in the first one, and you should have a working
multiplayer game.

That should work for both public and private games on the same machine.
If you have another machine handy, select a public game on the server, and
on the other machine specify the address of the server machine when you
join the game.

I just built git [782fca] and it worked fine, but when I ran it with ant
dist -Dprint.manual.is.up.to.date=
true, I got the following error: Build failed due to something with izpack.

Just in case I somehow messed something up in the code beyond what's was in
the .diff file, I'll do a clean pull from the repository tomorrow sometime
(Wednes my time). Should I rerun the .diff change?

This uses: Windows 8.1 64-bit; JDK 1.8 u 25

This is the raw output from Command Prompt:

No. What I do is start freecol once, select "start multiplayer game",
which will bring up the usual start-game panel (with an extra chat

I just ran "ant dist -Dprint.manual.is.up.to.date=true" on the most recent
git [d48491] without making any code changes and still received the error
with executeIzpack.

On the other hand, Multiplayer on a single Windows system seems to work
just fine for me. I only seem to be getting one .log and set of Autosaves
though. Is that a designed behavior?

I know that I had no luck trying the patch you provided, but that still
may

have been a build issue unrelated to the actual installer. I never got
the

installer ,exe file to run.
I think the patch is pretty harmless, so I have committed it
(git.9becbcd). When you get a chance have another go with trunk (using
ant -Dprint.manual.is.up.to.date=true ...) and see how the installer is
behaving now.

I've never tried multi-player. Do you have to actually play against
someone?
Cheers,
Mike Pope

I just ran "ant dist -Dprint.manual.is.up.to.date=true" on the most recent
git [d48491] without making any code changes and still received the error
with executeIzpack.
Is it still complaining at the point where the manual is generated or has
it moved on further?

On the other hand, Multiplayer on a single Windows system seems to work
just fine for me. I only seem to be getting one .log and set of Autosaves
though. Is that a designed behavior?
Only the server should be saving the game, so only one set of autosaves
is correct. The logs are probably just defaulting to the same place, you
can probably get another one with the command line option.

It fails when trying to build "executeIzpack" as shown in the log sent at
appx:

Minneapolis (U.S.A. - Minnesota) Midnight between Tuesday, January
27, 2015 and Wednesday, January 28, 2015 CST UTC-6 hours

For clarity and convenience, I reran ant dist "ant dist" and "ant dist
-Dprint.manual.is.up.to.date=true" on git [f18bb5] on a different computer
(clean install after deleting existing git download) and got the same build
error. I have attached both error logs in one PDF document.

The following is true of these tests:

Compiled on Windows 8.1 64-bit
Compiled with Ant 1.9.4
Compiled with JDK 1.8 u 25
Compiled from FreeCol revision: [f18bb5]

Not quite. The -Dprint... thing worked and it did not fail trying to run
pdflatex as shown in that old log.

It is now failing due to not running InstallerTranslations. This is
mysterious to me, but the developer doco says failures here can be
ignored. AFAICT it did build an installer (in the "dist" directory). Do
you see it, and if so, does it work?

It also whines about not finding git, but that is also harmless.

Mike,

There is a FreeCol.exe in the dist/win/freecol and an uninstaller/ as well,
but as far as I can tell, clicking either results in nothing happening. You
can also "run as an administrator" and that does nothing as well.

The file itself is 394 KB (403,456 bytes). The uninstaller.exe is 392 KB
(401,920 bytes).

For reference, the freecol-0.11.1-installer.exe file is 37.0 MB (38,874,624
bytes).

I have attached a decompressed version of the freecol.exe file and for
reference I've attached the file names in an image. It seems to be just
default test or example files of some kind.

Best,
